Sustainability in Detroit

“Sustainability is not a buzz word to me, or to my business.  It is a way of life. A model for a new future.  I want to ensure that I am tapped into the right resources who understand the importance of running a sustainable business, and who can provide support when needed. You know of any?”

Here’s a few to get you started; a community run garden resources program, a green business incubator, and information how to obtain LEED certification.  Many more organizations committed to sustainability exist in Detroit.  Ask a local for their favorite, or better yet, seek them out on your own.

The Green Garage

The Green Garage is 3 things: a building located in the Midtown area of Detroit, a business enterprise, and a community of people dedicated to Detroit’s sustainable future.  The building dates back to 1920, when it was a showroom for Model T-based automobiles, and is on the National Registry of Historic Places (see building history).  It was purchased in 2008 by Tom and Peggy Brennan, who, with a community of about 40 individuals, have developed plans for a green/historic renovation, and a business plan (developing green businesses). US Green Building Council

The Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a 501 c3 non-profit organization committed to a prosperous and sustainable future for our nation through cost-efficient and energy-saving green buildings.  Developed LEED certification system. Click Here for more information.

Recycle Here

Recycle Here! was formed in 2005 to address the need for recycling options in the City of Detroit. What began as a grassroots, neighborhood, recycling event has evolved into a city-wide, fully-funded, neighborhood based recycling program. To date, over 2,000,000 pounds of recyclable material has been collected from over 50,000 citizens visiting Recycle Here!’s drop off facilities.  The beauty of the Recycle Here! model is that it is a citizen led movement to fill a need at a time when government could not.  We’re fortunate that Detroit is home to and continues to nurture many such movements. Click Here for more information.
