Drinks x Design: Shinola

Wednesday, Feb 27th, 2013 by

Thursday, March 14th
5:30 PM – 8 PM
Shinola (485 W Milwaukee Ave, 5th floor)

What more do we have to say than Shinola?

This maker of premium watches, bicycles, leather goods and journals selected Detroit to house their state-of-the-art watch factory and employ local talent to build their high-quality watches and urban bicycles. While many of us have learned more about Shinola from their participation in DLECTRICTY and upcoming involvement as the official timepiece for the Grand Prix, they are still a little bit of a mystery.

We are excited to provide Detroit’s creative community a look into this exclusive space to as well as celebrate the launch of Shinola’s e-commerce website (www.shinola.com).

When viewing the space, keep in mind that when Shinola decided to make the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education their home, they consulted and collaborated with students from the College for Creative Studies. The Graphic Design students helped develop their brand, media and communication strategy. Interior Design students focused on researching and applying design concepts to the space with an emphasis on furniture application, sustainable products and local sourcing. The Product Design students focused on envisioning a signature bicycle, specifically for Shinola. Please join us in welcoming Shinola to Detroit.

A note from Shinola:

In the fall of 2011, Shinola was conceived as a collaboration between individuals who believe that products should be built to last, and they should be built right here in America. As makers of modern, handcrafted watches, bicycles, leather goods, and journals, we are proud to be based in Detroit, a community-minded city with a strong manufacturing legacy. We built our watch factory and bicycle workshop within the College for Creative Studies in the former Argonaut building. The majority of our watches retail between $450 to $850, our leather products range from $65 to $595, journals between $6.95 and $19.95, and our bikes are $1,950 and $2,950, respectively. Launching our online shop in March 2013, our distribution will include specialty and jewelry retailers, and upscale department stores nationwide this fall. And in early Summer 2013, we will also have flagship stores in Midtown Detroit and Tribeca, New York City.  As a new company with a storied name, we stand for skill at scale, the preservation of craft, the beauty of industry.
